Dr. Chiara Casonato
Therapist
I am dr. Chiara Casonato, English speaking Therapist.
In my experience with international clients, there are a lot of challenges that expats face when trying to find an English speaking therapist in Rome, especially for children and families. It can be incredibly challenging to locate therapy in English, which for expats is essential for effective communication during therapy sessions.
I firmly believe that everyone deserves access to therapy in a language they feel comfortable with. After all, open and honest dialogue is at the heart of successful therapy. Additionally, bilingual or future bilingual English-Italian children deserve a therapist who can truly understand and connect with them, regardless of which language they choose to express themselves in (even when it’s a mix of both!).
That’s where I come in. As a therapist, I am passionate about working with children, families, and adults in both English and Italian. My goal is to create a safe and supportive environment where my clients can freely express themselves in the language of their choice. Let’s embark on this therapeutic journey together!
Remember, seeking help is a sign of strength, and below you will find the resources available to support you on your journey towards improved mental health and well-being. This step is the hardest one on that journey.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are you a licensed psychologist and psychotherapist in Italy?
Yes. I am a registered psychologist and psychotherapist in Italy, registered with the Ordine degli Psicologi e delle Psicologhe della Liguria, registration no. 2823. I have specialist training in psychodynamic psychotherapy, EMDR Level II and Circle of Security Parenting.
Do you offer therapy entirely in English?
Yes. Sessions can be conducted entirely in English or Italian. I also work with bilingual children and families who may naturally move between both languages.
Do you have experience working with expats and international families?
Yes. I have extensive experience working with expats, bilingual children and international families. Therapy can provide support with relocation, cultural adjustment, identity and belonging, parenting away from familiar support networks, and the emotional impact of living between different countries and cultures.
What can I expect from the first session?
The first session is an opportunity to talk about what has brought you to therapy, your current needs and what you hope to gain from the process. We can begin to understand your situation together, discuss how I work and consider whether my approach feels like the right fit for you. There is no expectation to share everything at once.
Who do you work with?
I work with adults, children, teenagers and parents, with particular experience supporting expats, bilingual children and international families. I do not currently offer couples therapy.
What can therapy help with?
I support people experiencing anxiety, emotional overwhelm, trauma, grief, relationship difficulties, identity questions and major life transitions, including the challenges of relocating or living abroad. With children and parents, our work may also focus on emotional regulation, behavioural or school difficulties and parent-child relationships.
What therapeutic approaches do you use?
My work is rooted in attachment theory, psychodynamic psychotherapy, somatic therapy and trauma-informed care. Depending on each person’s needs, I may also integrate EMDR therapy.
Do you offer online sessions?
Adults and parents can attend either in person or online. Therapy with children is generally offered in person at my practice in Prati, Rome.
How does child therapy begin?
The process usually begins with an initial consultation with the parents. This is followed by a small number of meetings with the child and a feedback session with the parents, so that we can understand the child’s needs and agree on the most appropriate way forward.
Can parents seek support without their child attending therapy?
Yes. Parenting support can take place without the child attending sessions. It can be helpful when parents want to better understand their child’s behaviour and emotional needs, reflect on family dynamics or find new ways of responding to difficult moments.
